Every time I return to Yxskaftkälen I get the same feeling. Time stands still, everything is peaceful and silent and you´re surrounded by darkness. One evening I got outside to enjoy the sound of silence – and realized it wasn´t silent at all. Mooing cows, dogs barking and howling – at least I hope it was dogs. But you can´t compare these sounds to those you have to live with in a town…

I´m waiting for the summer. The snow is almost gone now and I have started preparing for a hot summer in Yxskaftkälen. After last year´s summer that never came and this horrible winter we really have deserved at least five months of sun…
I have fixed the greenhouse with plastic and duck tape, which doesn´t look so good, but I think it will work until I have the energy to repare it properly.

Prepering for next winter but staying away from the chain saw… don´t think that tool would be healthy for me, so I´m extremely grateful for all the help I got. THANKS!!!
There´s a lot more going on in the village than I expected. People come together for coffee, creative evenings or physical group training in the local ”bygdegård”. They also organize After Work and pub-nights now and then so it´s possible to have a social life.
Time to sum up my first eight months in Yxskaftkälen. In the beginning, September last year, there was nothing but darkness. On the seventh day I found bearshit on the porch which really made me wonder what the heck I was doing here…
Nature came a little too close. Anyway, this made me a bit nervous and I didn´t smoke after dusk for a while – not before I considered it safe and figured the bears had gone to sleep for the winter.
Of course it would be a much bigger problem for me if it turned out that it was a neighbour who had left that little brown gift for me, but I´m still thinking about making some kind of ”scare bear” like some kind of scare crow… Or remember to be extremely noisy when I´m outdoors. I think I´ve heard that there are about 850 brown bears in Jämtland so I probably have to get used to the thought that there might be more bears than humans in and around this village.
